Victoria offers a wide range of bushwalking experiences with a landscape that varies from
desert to temperate woodlands to mountain forests and alpine ranges.
35% of Victoria is public land, of which 14% is National, State and other parks. Government, local councils
and community groups have created many walking tracks and trails in parks and other public land to enable
appreciation of the local area and environment, and in recognition of the physical and mental health benefits
of bushwalking.
There is a network of 2000 formal trails covering a distance of 8000 kilometres. Some trails are shared
with cyclists and horse riders but the greatest proportion is for walking only. There are also many
opportunities for off track or exploratory walking.
The "Maps and Tracks" page provides links to web sites that provide information about specific parks and
regions, walks and trails.
We strongly recommend that you read the WalkSafe page, especially if you are unfamiliar with Victorian
conditions or are planning to lead a group of walkers. This information is also published as a booklet "Walksafe"
which is available from our office.
