In 2008 Bushwalking Victoria announced an Awards Scheme to recognise outstanding contributions
made by individuals or clubs to bushwalking in Victoria. Clubs and individuals involved in
activities such as search and rescue, track maintenance and conservation projects enhance the safety
and enjoyment of all bushwalkers and enrich our society as a whole.
These awards acknowledge the dedication of those whose special efforts have made a difference.
Inaugural Awards
Nominations were received for each of the three available
categories, and following an extensive evaluation by a special
sub-committee, the Board of Bushwalking Victoria has great
pleasure in announcing the awards listed below. The awards were
presented to recipients at a special ceremony following the 2009
Presidents Conference and 2009 Annual General Meeting on
Saturday 20 June. For full details of each award, see the

Special Recognition Award — Person or Organisation
Presented in recognition of a significant contribution to the
advancement and recognition of recreational walking in Victoria:
- Chris Baxter OAM, Founder of Wild Magazine
- Bill Brand QPM, Victoria Police (retired)
- John Chapman, Publisher
- Greg Young, Parks Victoria
Distinguished Service Award — Individual
Presented in recognition of a significant contribution to the
enhancement and development of recreational bushwalking in
Victoria, furthering the objectives of Bushwalking Victoria and
adding value to the wider Victorian community:
- Graeme Allen, Geelong Bushwalking Club
- Bill Bewsher, Life member, Melbourne University
Mountaineering Club
- Stuart Brookes OAM, Life member, Victorian Mountain Tramping
Club
- John Van Gemert, Life member, Geelong Bushwalking Club
- Tom Buykx, Catholic Walking Club of Victoria
Distinguished Service Award — Club
Presented in recognition of a significant contribution to the
enhancement and development of recreational bushwalking in
Victoria, furthering the objectives of Bushwalking Victoria and
adding value to the wider Victorian community:
- CAEX Bushwalking Club
- Melbourne Bushwalkers
- Melbourne Walking Club
- Melbourne Women’s Walking Club
- Melbourne University Mountaineering Club (MUMC)
Foundation Clubs still Members Today
In addition to the recognition awards, to mark the Bushwalking
Victoria 75th anniversary an additional once only Foundation
Member Recognition Certificate was presented to the following
clubs still operating today that were founding members of our
organisation:
- Melbourne Women’s Walking Club
- Melbourne Walking Club (Formerly the Melbourne Amateur
Walking and Touring Club)
- Ramblers Walking Club (Formerly the Cheerio Club)
- Victorian Rovers - Scout Association
